Jose Arango, Cigar Industry Pioneer, Dies
Pioneer cigar manufacturer Jose Arango, of South Newport Ave., died Sunday night in a Tampa hospital. He was 81 years old. Mr. Arango was a native of Asturias, Spain, and had been a resident of Tampa for 32 years. He came to the United States in 1883, and four years later settled at Port Tampa City where he learned the cigar industry. Eighteen months later he went to Chicago where he founded the firm of Jose Arango and Co. In 1921 he moved the business to Tampa where it still is operating. Mr. Arango was past president of the Cigar Manufacturers Association, a member of the Sacred Heart Church and Centro Asturiano Club. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Herman Lopez and Mrs. Jose Llaneza, of Tampa; two sons, Anthony Arango, of Tampa, and Joseph Arango, of Chicago; and three grandchildren.
