Captain Arthur Emerson Mukomela, Medical Corps, US Navy (Ret) 82, a longtime Escondido resident, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010. Dr. Mukomela was born on October 5, 1927, in Langdon, ND. He attended college at Jamestown College in Jamestown, ND and the University of North Dakota Medical School in Grand Forks, ND before receiving his Medical Doctorate from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Mukomela served in the army as a laboratory technician for 4 years, followed by an additional 20 years in the Navy as a doctor before retiring as a Captain. He later worked as a Pathologist for Palomar and Pomerado Hospitals for 25 years. He was a fantastic cook who was known for his candy caramels. Dr. Mukomela enjoyed 40 years of marriage to his wife Sheila before her death in 1997. He married his wife Marilyn on September 17, 2000, with whom he enjoyed his retirement years of travel, square dancing and attending the grandchildren's school and sport functions. He is survived by wife Marilyn of Escondido; children, Thomas Mukomela of Oceanside, Monica (John) Fryday of San Marcos, Paul Mukomela of San Rafael, CA, Marcy (Michael) Newell of Buhl, Idaho, and Matthew Mukomela of San Diego; step-children, Marcie (Dave) Carnahan of Valley Center and Dan Gilliland of Escondido; brothers, Kenneth (Gwen) Mukomela of Marshall, MN, and Robert (Kay) Mukomela of Fort Mill, SC; sisters, Shirley Lazarz of Sun City, AZ, Marge (Robert) Logan of Des Moines, IA, Lois (Eldon) Nolte of Des Moines, IA, and Cheryl (Darrell) Ballweg of Langdon, ND; and his grandchildren Megan, Ian, Spencer, Trae, Drayton, Cory, Brandon, Steve and Mike. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 28, 2010, at the Church of St. Timothy in Escondido. The Committal will be held at a later date at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery in Oceanside. Arrangements are by Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Elizabeth Hospice, American Cancer Society or The Rotary Foundation.

* Correction based upon personal knowledge. Prior to going to college Art served a hitch in the army where he served as a medical lab technician. This time combined with his later navy career made up the 25 years. As a young navy doctor he did his residency at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois in the early 1960s. He later served many years at Camp Pendelton Marine Base, retiring in 1975.
