Enlisted in the 7th Rhode Island Infantry, wounded at battle of Fredricksburg, Virginia. Lost leg and was discharged. Was a farmer, married Lucetta Potter and had five daughters.

Pvt William Rathbun (right) with unidentified soldier. William was severely wounded at Fredricksburg (Dec. 1862) trying to carry off this soldier. I believe he is Pvt Oliver Dowd, who was wounded and in the same company as William and his brothers. Dowd later married a sister of William.
