John Alexander Rothrock was the eldest of ten known children of Jesse B. Rothrock (1818-1893) and Louisa (went by Lucy) Jane Waisner Rothrock (1821-1860), who married 23 Mar 1841 at Davidson County, North Carolina. After Lucy died, Jesse remarried to the widow Sarah Ann Wilson Pearson (1832-1907) on 06 Jun 1861 at Bartholomew County, Indiana and had an additional four known children.

John served with Company I, 33rd Regiment Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. After the war he married to Maranda Emerline Shore (1840-1872) on 22 Aug 1865 at St. Louis Crossing, Bartholomew County, Indiana. John and Maranda were the parents of four known children, namely:

1. Lora Etta Rothrock Coffey (1867-1891)
2. Lucy Susan Rothrock Downey (1868-1959)
3. Luther Delano Rothrock (1870-1953)
4. Leonard William Rothrock (1872-1872)

After Maranda died, John remarried to the widow Mrs. Sarah Spraker Reed (1841-1923) on 08 Apr 1873 at Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois. John and Sarah were the parents of five known children, namely:

5. Listus James Rothrock (1873-1940)
6. Leonna Jane Rothrock (1876-1876)
7. Lawrence Harmon Rothrock (1878-1880)
8. Logan Jesse Rothrock (1883-1889)
9. Leamon Emmett Rothrock (1885-1969)
