Ervin Freeman (went by Freeman) Rothrock was the eighth of ten known children of Jesse B. Rothrock (1818-1893) and Louisa Jane Waisner Rothrock (1821-1860), who married 23 Mar 1841 at Davidson County, North Carolina. After Louisa died, Jesse remarried to the widow Sarah Ann Wilson Pearson (1832-1907) on 06 Jun 1861 at Bartholomew County, Indiana and had an additional four children.

Freeman married Susan Medora Chamberlain (1858-1915) on 19 Feb 1885 at Rantoul, Champaign County, Illinois. Freeman and Susan were the parents of ten known children, namely:

1. Mary Edith Rothrock Norris (1886-1940)
2. Jesse Stevenson Rothrock (1887-1958)
3. Harmon Carl Rothrock (1889-1969)
4. Earl Freeman Rothrock (1891-1965)
5. Raymond Clinton Rothrock (1893-1973)
6. Clarence Lee Rothrock (1895-1968)
7. Bertha Susan Rothrock (1896-1941)
8. Lucy Alice Rothrock (1898-1900)
9. Dora L. Rothrock (1901-1986)
10. Nora L. Rothrock (1901-1988)
