An obituary for Benjamin Cowgill was carried in the News Palladium on 28 May 1935 and it reads: “Benj. F. Cowgill, 89, Long Ill, Expires; Services Friday-The death of Benjamin Franklin Cowgill, 89, resident of Benton Harbor 45 years, occurred at 7 a.m. today at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Edward Bender, at Berrien Springs, with whom he had lived the last 15 months. Mr. Cowgill had been ill two years. He was born in Ohio November 11, 1845, and came to Michigan to settle in Benton harbor more than 40 years ago. He and his surviving widow celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last May 24. He was a member of the Christian church. Surviving besides the widow are four sons and a daughter; Frank of Michigan city, Tom of Coloma, Roy of Buchanan and Cyrus of Detroit, and Mrs. Bender. Three sons and two sons preceded their father in death. There survive also 35 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the Dormo… and Kerlikowske chapel in St. Joseph. The Rev. F. A. Hood of Royalton will officiate.”

Gravesite Details
The cemetery was started as a church cemetery; Zion Evangelical United Brethren then reorganized as New Hope United Methodist. The church was burned down by arsons in 1983. The church dissolved and the cemetery was given to Bainbridge Township.
