Max was born Mendel Kossower in Krasilov, Khmelnytska Oblast, the sixth of nine surviving children of Rabbi Pinchos Kossower and Gitel Beitchman Cosover. He immigrated through Ellis Island on Dec. 9, 1921.
At one time, he worked in the shipping department of a clothing manufacturer. He lived in the Bronx for many years.
Max spent the latter part of his life in the Pilgrim State Psychiatric Hospital in West Brentwood, Suffolk Co., New York.
