Rena Braden joined her Father in Heaven on May 21, 2010 after 97 years of a life well lived. She was reunited with her loving husband, Ralph Braden, Sr., who has been with the Father since May 10, 1989.

Rena is survived by her daughter Barbara Braden Loners (Scott Loners), grandson Seth Whelan (Cecily) of Seattle and granddaughter Tonya Whelan of Sedona, AZ; and her son Ralph Braden, Jr. (Kathi) of Colorado Springs and grandson Nate Braden of Denver.

Rena was born July 7, 1912 in Mantee, MS. After graduation from nursing school in Greenwood, MS, she worked in the public health field. With a spirit of adventure and desire to serve her country, she sailed through the Panama Canal to serve as a nurse with the US Army in the South Pacific during World War II, including stations at New Hebrides and New Caledonia.

She met her future husband Ralph Sr. in 1941. Ralph served with the US Army in the Pacific, including the campaigns at Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. They were married in 1944. After the war, Rena and Ralph settled in Ft. Lupton, CO and lived there until 1954, then in Ft. Morgan, CO until 1963, in Ft. Collins, CO until 1991 and then in Seattle where she lived until her passing.

Rena continued her nursing career at the Community Hospital in Brush, CO and at Poudre Valley Memorial Hospital in Ft. Collins, where as head nurse, she mentored many up and coming nurses. Rena's greatest joy was in being with her family.

She and Ralph would attend all the events that Barb and Ralph Jr. were involved in from elementary school to college graduation. She loved to travel. As the kids were growing, it was on road trips to Ohio, Mississippi and Washington State to visit relatives, but she and Ralph enjoyed trips to Europe, Alaska and Japan in the autumn years of their life.

Rena was also active in PEO and in her earlier years in Eastern Star. Always the southern girl, Rena never lost her Mississippi accent. She loved playing bridge and cribbage at which she excelled right to the end. Her energy was boundless and she continued to walk and hike well into her later years.

Rena will be interred with Ralph Sr. at Ft. Logan National Cemetery with private services. Please make any memorial contributions to Evergreen Hospice Healthcare Foundation, 12040 NE 128th Street, Kirkland, WA 98034.
