Madelyn June Knittel Thompson, age 86, of McDermott, went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by her loved ones on May 28, 2010 at Southern Ohio Medical Center. Madelyn was born in Glen Rogers, WV, to the late John and Dema Wiseman Aliff on May 31, 1923. She is survived by her four children. Her eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her cherished cat, Boo and a special niece. Madelyn was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her baby son, Darrell; 3 brothers, Bert, Earl, and Walter Aliff; 2 sisters, Cleio Morgan and Wilda Radabaugh; and a special niece, Doris Cossu. She was a graduate of Wakefield High School and the first in her family to complete high school. Madelyn worked as a cook in the Northwest School District before going on to graduate from Mercy Hospital's Practical Nurse Program in 1970, at the age of 47 with three children at home. She worked for Southern Ohio Medical Center in the O.R. as a certified scrub technician for 17 years. Upon retirement, she enjoyed crafting, flower gardening, and going to church. She was also an avid fan of "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars." She was an active member of Joseph Spencer Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and attended Pleasant Hill Church, when her health allowed. Her greatest pleasure was time with her family and enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Botkin Funeral Home in Otway, with Pastor Joseph Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in Garvin Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday the 1st and from 12:00-1:00 on Wednesday the 2nd at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be made to Sierra's Haven, St. Jude's children's Hospital, or the American Cancer Society. Madelyn was a special person and will be greatly missed.
