Claude C Murray was the son of Mary Ann Elizabeth Middleton, and the grandson of pioneer settlers Alex and Polly Middleton. His father was the Irishman Bernard "Barney" Murray, whose grave has only recently been located.

At the time of Claude's birth, the area was part of McIntosh County. Today's township of Ludowici was in those days known as Johnson's Station. According to all records, Claude spent his entire life in that same area - Militia district 24. However at the time of the 1940 census, Claude was living with his daughter Ruby and son-in-law Charlie Tidwell in Bryan County Georgia.

In 1900 the census sheets show that Claude and his mother were living in a home that he owned, with his Uncle Henry Middleton living on one side, and his Uncle Charles Lawson Middleton living on the other.

The 1940 census asks a question regarding education. Claude indicated that he only completed elementary school through the 4th grade.

His middle name Capel (found on at least two census count sheets) doubtless comes from his maternal Uncle Capel Raiford Middleton.

Property records indicate that Claude was a Trustee of the Middleton Memorial Methodist Church. According to a church history penned in 1973 by his daughter Jane Louisa Murray Williams, Claude participated in the movement of the church building from its previous location to the current site in 1925.

Family tradition says that Claude's mother, Mary Ann Elizabeth Middleton Murray lived with Claude until her death in May 1901. Three months later Claude married Emma G Davis in Liberty County on August 11, 1901. Together they had seven girls, six of whom survived into adulthood. Their daughter Ruth died aged two and a half in 1912.
