Howard Holmes, 99, of Oxford, OH died Saturday, May 29, 2010, in Oxford, OH. Howard was born March 17, 1911, in Minden to Carl and Mary (Porter) Holmes.

In 1936, he married Leola Shannon.

Survivors include his sons, Charles and his wife, Susan, Gerald and Philip; grandchildren, Terri Schmitt and her husband, Eric, Richard Holmes and Jean Holmes Gilbert and her husband, Steve; and great-grandchildren, Anna and Kristina Schmitt and Ian Holmes Gilbert.

He grew up in the Minden area and graduated from Minden High School. Before graduating from high school, he was the head butter maker for the Minden Creamery. He attended the University of Nebraska for one year and the Milwaukee School of Engineering for one year.

He played baseball and softball for many local teams in Minden. He is one of very few players who hit three home runs in one inning. He was a catcher for the Ogallala, Neb., City Team and the Milwaukee School of Engineering team.

Howard was a surveyor on the Kingsley Dam in Ogallala. He worked many jobs in Minden, Milwaukee and Cheyenne, Wyo. He survived the huge explosion in 1945 at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings, Neb. He worked on building the U.S. Air Base at Thule, Greenland. He credits his experience as chief troubleshooter there for teaching him many valuable skills.

In 1955, he started with Lockheed Aircraft Corp. and worked there as an instrument technician and worked in every Lockheed plant in the United States until his retirement in 1976.

Howard and Leola lived in Burbank, Reseda and Northridge, Calif. In January 2008, Howard moved to Oxford.

He was a member of Reseda United Methodist Church from 1956 until his death. There will be a memorial service in Reseda for his many friends there. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Without preaching, he taught his children by living the example of Jesus. He didn't preach anything except the great value of a college education. He was a giving, caring, loving husband and father.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Pauline Strand, Betty June Peachee and Gwen Hancher.
