John Hegnes (on his naturalizations papers he signed his surname as Hegnos), was born on March 28, 1843 in Lilleheiernaes Farm, Vestre Toten, Norway, he was christened on April 23, 1843, Aas Kirke, confirmed on Oct. 4, 1857 as AAs Kirke.

His parents was Christian Jacobsen (Bililiestuen) Heggernes and Helene Olsdatter Glaeserudbakken.

John left Oslo, Norway on May 17, 1867 for America

He came to the home of Jorgen and Johanne Linnevold, Decorah, Iowa. Johanne Linnevold was his first cousin, she being the daughter of Johannes Jacobsen (Bililiestuen) Sivesind, her father Johannes was a brother of Christian Heggerness.
