Doris Gwilliam Thornton died unexpectedly on April 1, 2005, in Salt Lake City.

Doris was born March 17, 1926 in Weiser, Idaho to Elwood Stanford Gwilliam and Dagmar Aasa Gwilliam. Doris was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions of leadership. She and her husband, William Russell Thornton, served four years in the Portland, Ore. LDS Temple.

Doris graduated from Boise High School, and received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Brigham Young University. She taught elementary school for 23 years in two different schools: Monroe Elementary in Boise and Vose Elementary in Beaverton, Ore.

Doris was devoted to her family and friends, loved attending her grandchildren's special events, and loved traveling and camping with her family. She was an excellent cook and loved to entertain. She was blessed with many gifts and talents which she shared with everyone. She was generous with her time and means, and her love, kindness and compassion touched the hearts of many.

She lived in Boise at the time of her death. she is survived by her children: Ann Anderson, Bill Thornton (Lori), Nancy Barrick (Greg), and Elaine Josi (Shawn) as well as her grandchildren: Ashlee and her husband Kawika, Courtney and her husband Paul, Rachel, Eric and Shelby; Brooke, Lindsay, Jeffrey, Briana and her husband Andy, and McCall; and Stacy, Brandon, Tonya and Kellie. She is also survived by her brothers Elwood and Jerry Gwilliam, and her sister Norma Gwilliam. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, April 7, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ten Mile Ward, Meridian West Stake building, 1985 North Black Cat Road, Meridian. Friends and family are invited to call at the Relyea Funeral Chapel, 318 North Latah aStreet, Boise on Wednesday, April 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and at the church from 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. prior to the services.
