Christ was one of thirteen children born to Nicholas (II) and Elizabeth (Harris) Bitikofer. He was a "middle child".
He married Sophia Leibold sometime around 1877 or 1878.

His children were: Mary Ellen (infant or stillborn) 1878; Lewis 1880-1901; Ammon 1883-1931; Clara Bitikofer (Mrs. Joseph S. Loucks) 1886-1969; Frederick (Fred) 1889-1969;Daughter Frances Bitikofer (Mrs. Aaron Stolfus)1892-1974.

The family moved from Ohio to near Stockton, Missouri in the early 1890's. Reportedly Frances was born in 1892 in Holmes County Ohio, so it may have been sometime soon following her birth, as other accounts say they moved when Fred was "very young". Son Lewis either remained in Stockton or traveled to Kansas, then back, because he died in 1901 and is buried in Missouri.

In February of 1900, the family moved by covered wagon to the Canton, Kansas community. Sophia's parents, George and Magdalena Leibold, came with them "in their three-wagon caravan". The family "faced many obstacles as they traveled across the Flint Hills of Kansas" (according to Fred Bitikofer's obituary). A "blinding snow storm" came only two days after their arrival. They were welcomed by a "Sister from the Spring Valley Community".*

Christ died of blood poisoning just two months after they arrived in Kansas. Sophia followed, just two months later, from consumption. Somehow, before both had died, one or both arranged for their children to be cared for by the Leibold grandparents and the Christian Miller family of the Spring Valley church.
