Together with his wife and 5 children George was a part of a group who sailed from Maine in 1866 to set up the first American colony at Jaffa. They believed they would prepare the way for the return of the Jews to their homeland. George died (probably from cholera) along with 2 of his children within a few weeks of arriving in Jaffa.
