From a family letter dated December 13. 1847: John Wingate Webb [Maidstone, Vermont to his sister, Maryanne Brackett (Webb) Gates [Pewaukee, Wisconsin]:
"Your Friends & connexions here enjoy good health with the exception of Foster. He has been confined to his bed some three weeks previous to which time he had kept the [H-n-] some 5 or 6 weeks & had been taking Jaynes medicines, when he was taken with bleeding, at the Lungs; had two spells of bleeding. Since then he has been gradually fading & becoming more reduced. We think his recovery extremely doubtful to Say the least: Still while there is life there Hope."
