Son of Dr. Jacob and Mary (Landis) Hostetter.
He was one of the principals in Hostetter & Smith, the manufacturer of Hostetter's Celebrated Stomach Bitters (a popular patent medicine of the period). He employed Charles W. Cooper (Find a Grave Memorial # 90015783)as his factory manager.
He made up a formula for a patent medicine, and in partnership with bis son and a Lancaster druggist named Green, who put his money against the Hostetter formula, they commenced the manufacture of the bitters.
