He was the son of Stephen Coward and Amelia "Milly" Emaline or Emelia Rogers, both of whom are presumed to have died in Rutherford Co., NC. He is interred at Big Level Baptist Church Cemetery at Mill Springs, NC. He was the husband of "Zillah" Ozella Bradley Coward and father of 9 children:
