Martin was born on April 16, 1937, in Clemons, Iowa. He was the son of Benjamin Vajgrt and Blanche (Rayman) Vajgrt. He grew up in State Center and graduated from State Center High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958. He married Diane Barry on May 17, 1959, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. They had four children. On Dec. 19, 1976 he was united in marriage to Mabel Reeves. Throughout the years, Martin was employed by Benson Optical, Lennox and Vajgrt Construction. In 1962, he started Vajgrt Lawn Grading & Seeding, retiring in 1995. Martin was a member of the Moose Lodge and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
Martin was survived by his wife, Mabel, of Holiday Lake; three sons: Martin (Lori) of Tulsa, Okla., Michael of Garwin and Matthew of Marshalltown; his daughter, Dietta Villarreal of Omaha Neb.; two step-sons: Roger (Dorothy) Reeves of Marshalltown and Jack Reeves of Arizona; 14 grandchildren: Bradley, Blake, Emily, Ashley, Jacob, Abbygale, Bailey, Amanda, Michael, Kelly, Jessie, Holly, Jason and Vicki; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Johnny (Carolann) Vajgrt of Marshalltown and James (Jackie) Vajgrt of Marshalltown; and a sister, Irene Ballard of Conrad.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Amil, Andy, Albert, Benny, Charles and Harold; five sisters: Sophia Shipley, Mary Determan, Blanche Vajgrt, Helen Slinker and Elsie Vajgrt; and his step-son, Bob Reeves.
