Julia S. López 94, died June 13, 2010.

Mrs. López was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; brothers, 'Mando, Ray and Lito Salazar; sisters, Sophie Miles and Josie Bell; son-in-law, Sonny Miles; and great-grandson, Ryder DeSoto.

She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy DeSoto and Sylvia Jo Miles; sons, Frankie (Kathy), Michael (Sandy) and Dale (Jessie); 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Her advocacy for public schools began in the 1940's at Safford School. She began volunteering at Roskruge School in 1954 when she and her husband became members of the Roskruge PTA. She served as a playground and cafeteria monitor for over 30 years. As a monitor, when there was a child who needed a hug, she gave a hug. When there was a child who needed a smile, she gave a smile.

She is a member of the Roskruge Hall of Fame and the cafeteria is named in her honor. Mrs. López always welcomed students from nearby Roskruge and Tucson High into her home to visit, use the phone or restroom, or wait for rides.

She was also a long-time member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Roskruge PTA, 501 E. 6th St., 85705. A Mass will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 338 W. University Blvd., Tucson, AZ at 10:00 a.m. A Committal Service will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Please join us for a celebration of life at the Roskruge Julia S. López Cafeteria immediately following.
