The following information is from Dennis Brandt (#47232334)

The son of Margaret Pitman, he married Mary B. ? and fathered David Smith (b. @1855), Hannah E. (b. @1857), Elizabeth (b. @1860), Molly B. & Etta May (b. @1867), John (b. 1869), and Bertie C. (b. @1873). In 1860, he was living in Peters Township, Franklin County, and stood 5' 10" tall with dark hair and blue eyes. At enlistment he gave his occupation as "soldier," but he later worked as a carpenter.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg September 28, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Wilkins, Pittsburgh, October 23 as a private with Co. A, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 5, 1864, at Whiteside, Marion County, Tennessee, and honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865.

His birth year is subject to question. At enlistment, he claimed to be thirty-eight years of age, but every census indicates a birth year c. 1828, which would have made him thirty-two or thirty-three.

In 1880, he and his family lived in Orbisonia, Huntingdon County, but by 1890 resided in Mount Holly Springs, Cumberland County.
