Notes from a telephone conversation between Nancy (Poppin) Umland and Faye (Papin) Veronin, daughter of Nick Papin. Faye and I are 1/2 first cousins.

I talked with Fae Papin Veronin on May 15, 2000. I asked her about her father and was he was like. She said:

He had the gift of gab. Although he was a farmer, he would rather be with people, exchanging local gossip at the local tavern. He didn't drink, but loved to socialize. He was punctual, positive, joyful, happy and loved to sing. Fae said her father would sing often at family and church gatherings. Because he loved people, Fae said he should have been a salesman. He was not a farmer. He must have been good enough because the family always had food to eat. Maybe they didn't have money, but they had food and each other. The children knew he loved them.

Nick liked to travel and would take off in a heartbeat when there was a family funeral or wedding. He would be the driver for others if they wanted to go somewhere.
Nick and Martha were married in San Francisco.

The Molokan Church is the minority now in AZ. Andy Conovaloff's father is the pastor at the church.

Brother Alex Papin stayed 5 years in AZ. Nick's wife Martha lived till she was a few week's shy of her 100th birthday. She was a strong woman.

QUESTIONS asked of my father, George John Poppin regarding the obituary:

NAP: Did Aunt Martha remarry? Why was Uncle Nick buried in Los Angeles?
GJP: Nick Papin of AZ was buried in LA ,
presumably......most of his children were living in the LA area. [Note: my father didn't think Martha had remarried after Nick's death. Vidge Papin, daughter in law, indicated she married an AZ preacher with last name of Tolmachoff. I also talked to daughter Alice in Phoenix and Alice said her mother had waited many years to remarry and Mr. Tolmachoff was a widower and also a member of her church. He died before she did.

NAP: It looks like Fae and Alice married in to the same family? can you explain?
GJP: "Presumably"
Vidge Papin: I believe Alice Veronin's husband was an uncle to Faye's husband; not too close

NAP So, Nick had 5 children: Bill, Alice, Fae, Ann and Vera.; Faye told me the children were: Faye, Alice, Bill, Vera, (Nick and Andrew died as babies in SF). Who then is Mary Bourg?
GJP: "Good question"
Vidge Papin: Mary is a sister your dad didn't recall - Mary Papin Bourg

NAP: John must be grandfather Poppin? Alex....Fred...Bill...Ann... were his siblings.
GJP: "Yes, that must be my pop..flowing , red beard and all!!"

NAP: Ann Veronin is Ann Papin, correct? How is she related to Daniel Conovaloff?
GJP: ...don't know
Vidge Papin: This Ann Veronin was Wanna Conovaloff before she married. She was not a Papin.

NAP: John J. Tolleson - note Tolleson again as mentioned in Uncle Nick's obit.
GJP: ...don't know.

Regarding TOLLESON, AZ
....a community around Phoenix, AZ...I was there as an infant...caught a train to LA with my father.....travelling with Dad was always a pleasure..he and I travelled to LA very often...sis Alice came along on one train trip to LA and we saw bonfires burning outside somewhere on the route...we were told that they were Indians...the train never felt so comfy after hearing that information..nice warm train!! There was Dad..sitting so comfortably and , yes, he was chewing gum..his favorite brand of gum was
JUICY FRUIT..."joosy frroot". Those were the days.

Nice going, Nancy!!! Once a Poppin ALWAYS A POPPIN.

NICK JOHN POPIN
Short like his brothers Alex, Fred and Bill...another vocalist....lived in AZ and we seldom saw each other. The last time I saw him was in Los Angeles during our (Dottie and I) visit there in 1946. He was very pleasant and cheerful. Cousin Mike Poppin's brother Jim went to live and work on his farm in the Phoenix area of AZ after his arrival in America in 1929. Fae Veronin gave a good description of him in one of your articles.
