John Fredrick Thompson was born February 4, 1892, to Peder Anton and Maria Frederikson Thompson. Ht was the last of the children to be born at the original Thompson homestead in Little Vineland Township. The family moved the following year from the "woods" to a new home out on the prairie in Vineland Township. John was baptized at the Sand Hill Lutheran Church and was confirmed there in 1906. He attended a small country school which was in the same section as where the family lived.
John was married to Belva Hanstad on January 16, 1918, at Crookston, Minnesota. Belva was born June 13, 1900, also in Vineland. Her family lived in the southeast corner of the same section as that of John's family. She was the daughter of Halfdan and Bergitta Hanstad. John was the second of the Thompson family to marry a Hanstad. His sister, Bertha, had married Belva's brother, Ole, just two years earlier.
The family lived and farmed at Climax, East Grand Forks, back to Climax and then to Erskine, all in Minnesota before John and Belva retired to East Grand Forks, living in housing for senior citizens. John died March 18, 1977 and was buried March 21 at the Sand Hill cemetery. Belva continued to live at Sunshine Terrace in East Grand Forks.

John and Belva had eight children: Harry Palmer, Marion Blanche, Irvin Raymond, Reuben Earl, Dennis Orville, the twins Bernice Lenora and Joyce Luverne, and Donna Mildred.
