Mrs Isaiah Shaum, 62, northeast of town in Harrison township, passed away at her home at 3:30 Saturday morning following an illness of tularemia. She was ill since November 18. She contracted the fever when she scratched her finger while dressing a rabbit. Her condition became serious on November 24 but she seemed to improve until a few days before her death when she grew worse again.
The daughter of Aaron and Mary Baer Weaver, Mrs Shaum was born east of town on June 16, 1878. She was married to Mr Shaum on August 15, 1897, and lived in the community all of her married life. Surviving are her husband, 12 children, Mrs Walter Witmer, Mrs Monroe Martin, Joe Shaum and Vernon Shaum of Goshen; Mrs Ezra Witmer and Mrs John Van Pelt of Columbiana, Ohio; Henry Shaum, east of town, and Harvey Shaum, Mrs Edwin Zimmerman, Florence, Paul and Wilma Shaum, all at home; 40 grandchildren; one brother, Henry Weaver of Goshen, and a half-brother, Eli Weaver of Mishawaka. A son, Warren, and a daughter, Mary preceded their mother in death. She was a member of the Whisler Mennonite church. Funeral service was held Monday at 2:00 pm at the Yellow Creek Frame church, following a service at the home at 1:30. The Rev Paul Hoover, assisted by the Rev Ray Yoder, officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
