Mathilda (Schwemberger) Kefes Kapp Morlock
(1850-1936)

Mathilda Morlock was the first child of Joseph and Mary (Strobel) Schwemberger who emigrated from the "Tyrol" in Austria circa 1850. Mathilda was born in either Ohio; Missouri; Mississippi; OR Louisiana; each census record, 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 lists a different state!!. Her death certificate, however, indicates she was born in Missouri. Her German-speaking parents made their way to the Over-the Rhine section of Cincinnati, OH which was a well-known German section of the city with many German newspapers, businesses, and beer gardens. Mathilda had several brothers and sisters as noted in the 1860 and 1870 census records, including: Matthias (born 1852); Joseph (born 1856); Dora/Johanna (born 1857); and Otto (born 1861). Joseph (her father) was a musician and worked in a coffee house (think Starbuck's with violin music), as were many in the Schwemberger family over the years. Mathilda met a butcher, William Kefes (born about 1845), a German Catholic who immigrated from Bavaria, Germany. They married circa 1868 when Mathilda was about 17. On Christmas day, 1868, their first child, William Paul Kefes was born in Cincinnati. Another son, Frank was born in 1870. Their last child, Hannah/Johanna was born in 1873. By 1880, Mathilda had re-married, a cigarmaker by the name of John Kapp who was 21 and born in Ohio (his parents were from Switzerland per the 1880 census). In 1883, a daughter named Mary (sometimes called Mamie) was born to Mathilda and John Kapp. Sadly, 1889, John Kapp died at a young age (30). At the turn of the century, in 1900, we find Mathilda listed as a widow, age 49, residing at 1207 Vine Street (the heart of Over-the-Rhine). Her daughter Mary was "working in the cigar industry." Mathilda marries for the third time, sometime between 1900 and 1910; he is a florist named Morlock. Moving on to 1910, we sadly find Mathilda living in Longview Asylum for the Insane. Her daughter Mary married a man named John Dudak in 1905. Mary's sister, Johanna Camm (married name), is also living with the Dudak family in 1920, as is Mathilda their mother. By 1930, Mathilda is listed once again as a patient in Longview Asylum for the Insane in Cincinnati. Her daughter Mary had re-married, a man named William Pieper; they resided in San Francisco at 23 Wood Street. Mathilda lived a long life, dying at the age of 85 at Longview Hospital. Her Death Notice read: "MORLOCK---Mathilda Morlock (nee Schwemberger), beloved mother of Mrs. Josie Kamm and Mrs. Mamie Pieper, Friday January 17, 1936. Funeral from Busse and Borgmann Co. mortuary, 1517 Freeman Avenue, January 21 at 8 a.m. Requiem high mass at St. John's church at 8:30 a.m." She was buried at St. John's German Catholic Cemetery in Cincinnati (Saint Bernard), OH. Her death certificate listed emphysema and heart trouble as her cause of death with a contributing cause of "senile psychoses."

Additional note:
It was interesting to note that no mention is made in the death notice of either Mathilda's two sons, William and Frank Kefes. William had married in 1892 in Cincinnati, OH and had moved to Chicago in about 1895, eventually settling for the rest of his life in Kenosha, WI. He had married and had 3 children. It is unclear what happened to Frank Kefes.
