James Paul "Scrappy" Weaver, 85, of Hollidaysburg, died Friday morning at Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg.

He was born in Newry, son of the late Frank and Bertie (Lykens) Weaver. He married Joyce Douglas on Dec. 23, 1947, at Simpson Methodist Church, Altoona, by the Rev. W.M. Young.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years; a son, Douglas, and his wife, Dr. Janelle Brumbaugh-Weaver; and one grandson, Adam.

He was preceded in death by Adam's twin, Zachary.

He was a 1943 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and a 1951 graduate of Penn State University with a teaching degree.

He volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy and was injured in a plane crash in Jacksonville, Fla., during a training exercise in a Dauntless Dive Bomber on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He served as an aviation radioman, third class.

He was a member of the varsity baseball team while in his junior and senior years at Hollidaysburg High School. He was the Golden Tiger's stellar second baseman for three years.

He first taught at Curtain School in Altoona, and retired in 1987 after 36 years of service at Hollidaysburg Junior High School teaching seventh grade ancient history.

In addition to his teaching duties, he served as Junior Varsity Coach at Hollidaysburg High School and as assistant to head coach Pat Cummings of the varsity baseball team from 1962-78 when, upon retirement of Mr. Cummings, Scrappy was named the Golden Tiger's Head Coach.

Mr. Weaver also operated Weaver's Grocery at 405 Mulberry St. from 1968-77.

He was a member of Newry Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Ironmasters Country Club. He also enjoyed hunting and sports.

There will be no public viewing. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family by the Rev. Becky Zeek at Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg (www.sorge funeral home.com). Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren.
