THE WORST IN YEARS

THURSDAY NIGHT'S STORM WAS A HOWLING SUCCESS

CHESTER CRONK AND ARA RICH, TWO FARMERS NEAR NASHVILLE, KILLED BY LIGHTNING.

About midnight on Thursday last one of the most terrific rain, hail, wind and electrical storms broke upon this city and vicinity that has been experienced in recent years and that its equal ever occurred is somewhat doubtful. And the storm was not at all local in its character for it affected all southern Michigan in its scope and its consequences were much more severe in some other places than here.

The only fatality that occurred in this vicinity was that resulting in the death of CHESTER CRONK and Ara Rich, farmers living two miles east of Nashville. This occurrence took place in the storm that occurred Thursday afternoon and which was not generally as severe as that which took place during the night. The men had taken refuge in a barn and had not been in its shelter more than three minutes when the building was enveloped in a blinding flash and when the terrified neighbors reached the place it was only to find the lifeless remains of the two men. A Horse in the barn was also killed. Messrs. CRONK and RICH were neighbors and men of family. They were much respected in the vicinity where they resided and their sudden and tragic taking off cast a gloom over the entire community. [Article continues on regarding the damage throughout the southern tier of Michigan].

The terrific thunder storm of July 4 was attended by much damage and two fatalities, Mr. Ara Rich and CHESTER CRONK being instantly killed by lightning while in Mr. Rich's barn unharnessing their horses. MR. CRONK'S funeral was held from the M.E. church Saturday afternoon, and Mr. Rich's Sunday, being conducted by the K.O.T.M. of which he was a member. The sympathy of the entire community is with the bereaved families so suddenly thrown into mourning.
