David's parents were Johann Adam Bolender, Jr. and his first wife Mary Magdalena Morr. His mother died when he was two months old. In 1804 his father moved to Centre County, Pennsylvania. His step-mother mistreated the younger children and they were sent back to Snyder County to live with relatives. By 1819 David and his brothers, George and Benjamin, had come to Stark County.
In 1821 David married Katharine Raider. (Katharine's maiden name has been recorded variously as Ricker, Rider, Riter, Reiter and Reuter).
After Catherine's death he married Airy Ann McKinney in 1824. Airy died in 1833.
He then married Rebecca Bixler in 1835.
When they first came to Stark County David and his brothers lived near Uniontown but after his first marriage David lived in Bolivar, Tuscarawas County for about ten years before settling in Canton.
