Moved to Oswichee in Russell County, Ala. during the Civil War, where he also became a planter/farmer, and aquired 10,000 acres of land on which to grow cotton.
He married Augusta Benning, sister of Gen. Henry L. Benning.
His wife, along with their five children, and his brother Albert, survived him in 1901.
While I created this memorial from info found in a news article about Mr. Patterson's death (as noted in "Note" section below), Contributor LFAmes1008 (#47026950) graciously sent his entire obit, as follows:
"Buried in Linwood. Funeral of Mr. M.L. Patterson Occurred at Noon Yesterday.
The remains of Mr. M.L. Patterson, who died Tuesday at Oswichee, Ala., were brought to this city yesterday on the Mobile and Girard train arriving here at 11:59 o'clock yesterday morning.
The funeral occurred from the church of the Holy Family, Rev. Father Schlenke officiating. The services were attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives of the family of the deceased. The interment was in Linwood cemetery, the following gentlemen acting as pallbearers: Messrs. R.W. Needham, Reese Crawford, R. Deignan, R.W. Slade, Lloyd Bowers and George Burrus.
The honorary pall bearers were Messrs. J.J. Slade, J.S. Garrett, W.R. Brown, J.F. Pou, Mark A. Bradford, D.F. Wilcox, H.C. McKee and William Bedell, Sr.
The news of Mr. Patterson's death created deep regret throughout this section, and especially in Columbus and Russell county."
