Arthur was the 7th child born to James and Eliza Deering, in Albany, New York in 1854. He married Cornelia Webster in 1878, they had two children, Maude Evelyn and Leona May Deering. In November of 1878, Arthur was duck hunting on the Detroit River opposite Ecorse. He dropped his rifle in the water, attempted to retrieve it, and before the harbor master could reach him, he had drowned. At the time of his death, he worked as a sign painter for the Michigan Car Works Co., associated with the railroad.
