BERTHA RIST

Bertha Kuffersmith Rist, daughter of Christian and Anne Kuffersmith, one of a family of four children, was born in Bern, Switzerland on February 26, 1867, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Wissler, in DuBois, on August 20, 1942, age 74 years, 11 months and 25 days.

She came to America at the age of 19 years and located in Richardson county. Her schooling was obtained in the land of her birth. She learned to read the English language with her children and received much pleasure from it until her eyesight became poor.

On September 26, 1889, she was united in marriage to Henry Rist, at Pawnee City. They established their home in the Dry Branch community where they resided until 1926, when they moved to Humboldt. For more than fifty years this happy union was maintained, until on March 5, 1941, the angel of death called her husband home. To this union five children were born, namely, Otto, Jesse, Walter, Freda
and Lydia.

She was a member of the Salem Reformed church. She cherished her faith and appreciated the beauty of a fellowship with God. Mrs. Rist has not been well for five years. On September 8, 1941, she suffered her first stroke and the last one Thursday, August 13, 1942, after which she lingered until the morning of August 20. She had been bedfast for about a year and has been patiently and carefully cared for in the home of her daughter, Lydia, since March 7, 1941, except for a few weeks spent in the hospital in Humboldt.

She is survived by one brother in Europe, and her five children, Otto, of Humboldt, Jesse, of Dawson, Walter, of Lincoln, Mrs. Freda Westerman, of Lincoln, and Mrs. Lydia Wissler, of DuBois, besides nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a number of friends.

Another of our pioneers has crossed the portals, another soul has met her maker, another home lost a mother, well may her soul rest and fond be the memory of her life among us. A patient sufferer, a kind neighbor and loyal friend, greatly will she be missed. Hers has been a busy life and truly she did her part to make a home and help build a country, for in 1886 new homes were opening up and man was striving to wrestle with forces of nature, to make a fertile land and make for himself a home.

Funeral services were held at the Fellers Chapel in Humboldt Saturday morning at 10 a.m., Rev. Otis Webb in charge.
