Joshua was born to David Comley, Sr., and Amelia Jane Hurt in Garrard or Washington County, Kentucky. On 14 Aug 1879 he married his first wife, Esther Jane Webb, by whom he had five children: Lily, William, Ulysses, Anna Pearl and Lee Roy. Shortly after the birth of Lee Roy, Joshua became involved with a young girl of the Cherokee Nation by the name of Sarah Rebecca Tapp. He was a blacksmith and had probably been called to shoe horses or fix machinery at the Shaker-run Pleasant Hill where Rebecca and her family were then living. Joshua abandoned Eliza and the children and ran off with Sarah, settling in Anderson, Indiana. They had eight children together: Bertha, Pearl, Edna, Bessie, Arthur, Helen, Ruth and Eugene. They did not marry until 17 Dec 1908 and it may be assumed that they may have waited until after the death of his first wife, Esther, in 1907. In Anderson, he operated his own blacksmith shop. Joshua died of gramo disease at the age of 52.

Joshua was my 2nd great grandfather.

Special thanks to fellow Comley descendant Tom Joswick for the headstone that he recently had placed on the graves of Joshua and his son Arthur.
