Galen Gilmore Passed Away Last Thursday

Galen Gilmore, for many years a resident and business man of El Dorado Springs, passed away at the veterans hospital in Excelsior Springs last Thursday morning. He had been a patient at that institution for almost eighteen months past and while his death was not unexpected, it culminated an illness of several years.

The remains were brought to this city last Friday and funeral services were held at the Methodist church Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Charles R. Swofford, pastor of the Methodist church at Harrisonville, MO., assisted by Rev. F. L. Standard, the local pastor.

C. T. Snodgrass, accompanied by Mrs. Salas Roe on the organ, rendered a couple of solos, entitled: "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."

At the conclusion of the services at the church the members of Harris Spicer Post,
V. F. W., and members of the American Legion took charge of the body and the V.F.W. ritualistic service was delivered at the graveside.

Mr. Gilmore, who was a charter member of Harris Spicer Post was the first member to die in the twenty-one years of the existence of the post which was granted a charter November 18, 1919. He was also a member of the Reeder-Koca Post of American Legion.

The Pall Bearers were: H. B. Davis, Elsworth Lochner, T. V. Phipps, M. L. Jennings,
J. Ralph Owen and L. E. Knowiton.

Galen Gilmore was born at Stockton, MO., February 20, 1892, and was reared from infancy to manhood by his grandparents, William B. & Sarah G. (Howard) Gilmore In early manhood he chose teaching as an avocation and taught several terms at rural schools in Cedar County.

Some twenty-five years ago he came to El Dorado Springs and was employed by the late W. L. Bailey in the produce business. After the death of Mr. Bailey he purchased the business, later disposing of name to Swift & Co., for whom he served as local manager, at their East Springs street produce house, for many years.

About two years ago he severed his connection with that firm and engaged in business for himself on South St. James street. However within a few months, owing to ill health, he was forced to abandon this project and entered the hospital at Excelsior Springs, Where he remained until the time of his death. During his stay there he was able to return home only once, which was last Christmas for a few days.

After his service with the army had terminated he returned to El Dorado Springs and reengaged in the produce business at his old location. Shortly after his return he was united in marriage to Miss Leona Darlington, of near Stockton. To this union one son Joe, was born, who graduated from EHS last spring and is now attending a business college in Kansas City. During his residency here Mr. Gilmore had filled several public positions. He served as alderman as a member of the park board and was president of the board of education at the time he was forced to enter the hospital. He had been a member of the Methodist church for the past thirteen years, and also took much interest in fraternal lodge work, being a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Knights of Pythias.

He enjoyed in a large measure the confidence and respect of his fellow businessmen. He was particularly generous with his time and finances in all measures affecting the public welfare. He had a most genial and likeable personality and he will be sorely missed in all worthy causes in our community.
