Lavantia Pratt was the daughter of Stephen Otis Pratt 1811 and Sally Sarah Gillett. Her parents had moved to New Albion, Cattaraugus, New York from Middlefield, Otsego, New York about 1834. Lavantia was born there shortly thereafter. The family later moved to Little Valley (1845) and Napoli (1847) in Cattagaugus County.

There, Almira, the sister of Lavantia, in about 1864 married Jonas Sutcliffe, an immigrant from England. They lived in Ellicott, Chautaugua County. They had four children. Almira died soon after giving birth to the fourth child in 1872.

In 1873 Jonas married Lavantia, who continued to raise the children, until she died in 1896. They had moved to Busti, Chautaugua County.
