Michael Shalaida, 86, of Hillside, N.J., died Sunday at Overlook Hospital, Summit, N.J.

Born on August 25, 1918, in the Alden Station section of Newport Township, he was a son of the late Peter (died 6 Sept 1936)and Mary (Puhar) Shalaida. He graduated from the former Newport Township High School and later the Milwaukee School of Engineering. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and attained the rank of staff sergeant.

He resided in Hillside, N.J., for 43 years and previously in Orange and Newark.

Mr. Shalaida had been employed as an auto mechanic for many years and specialized in electrical systems and carburetors. He was last employed by Service Auto Electric Company, Union, N.J., from where he retired in 1987.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hillside, N.J., where he was the current and longtime treasurer of its Holy Name Society.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Amelia Shalaida, Eva Sharek, and Mary Barno; and a brother, John Shalaida.

Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Pazdernik; sisters, Martha Polansky, Rochester, N.Y.; Olga Kish, Phillipsburg, Mont.; Pearl Shalaida, Hanover section of Nanticoke; numerous nieces and nephews.
