James O'Brien Killed Near Piedmont.

Jas. O'Brien, a section hand living at Piedmont, seven miles west of Severy, was instantly killed by the accidental discharge of a shot gun in the hands of S.H. Drake, at the Drake home about one mile east of Piedmont. The particulars as wel lean them are as follows: O'Brien with his family went to the home of Mr. Drake to spend the day, and before dinner it was suggested that they have a chicken. Mr. O'Brien with a target rifle and drake with a shot gun started to the yard where the chickens were. O'Brien was to shoot the chicken with his rifle and if he missed Drake was to shoot it with the shot gun. O'Brien shot and missed and in some way as Drake went to raise his gun it was discharged, the load entering the right breast of O'Brien tearing a hole through his side and killing him instantly. Mr. Drake who is an old man, and O'Brien were intimate friends and the accident has nearly driven Mr. Drake crazy. He is still nearly prostrated and it is feared by some that he may lose his mind over the affair.

The funeral of O'Brien was held at the M.E. church at Piedmont Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. Cullison of this city, after which the remains were interred in the Piedmont cemetery.

The deceased was born at Piedmont March 4, 1871, and was therefore aged 33 years, 9 months and 7 days. He leaves a wife and three small children besides a father, mother, three brothers and three sisters to mourn his loss.
