Dry goods merchant. Founder of what would become Arnold, Constable & Co., dry goods merchants of 19th Century New York City. Initially worked with his nephews, the Hearn brothers George Arnold and James A. Hearn, who left to found their own dry goods empire. By 1857, he had partnered with a former salesman, James M. Constable and the business grew and survived into the 1970s. Four of their buildings still stand, one at Broadway and 19th, one on Lady's Mile, one at 40th Street and 5th Avenue used as a branch of the New York Public Library, and their original "Marble Palace" of 1857 at Mercer and Canal. Members of both the Arnold and Constable families rest in this lot. Their in-laws were the founders and operators of Hearn's Department Store until the 1950s.
