Johann "John" Naschinski was born 21 August 1858 in Kunchengut, Kreis Osterode, Ostpreussen, the son of Adam Naschinski and Katharina Rykowski. He married Maria Rettkowski and had the following children: Gustav, Emil, Marie, Emma, Wilhelm, Martha, Elfrieda, Amelia Charlott, Louise, and Adina Anna. By the early 1900s, the family had emigrated to Gelsenkirchen, Bochum, and Erle.

Johann sailed from Antwerp 6 February 1904 on the S.S. Kroonland and arrived at the Port of New York on 17 February 1904. He stated that his last residence in Germany was Erle. His destination was the mining community of Munson, PA where he sought out a friend, Jacob Jankovitz. At an unknown point in time, Johann relocated to the mines of Frank, Alberta, Canada where he was joined by his son, Wilhelm, in 1911. Johann moved again to Springfield, Illinois, USA in 1912 where he was met by his wife, six of his daughters, and his son.

Johann chose to Americanize his name to John when he moved to the US. He worked in the coal mines of Sangamon County, Illinois and was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
