August possibly emigrated from what is currently Piotrków Trybunalski, Lodz, Poland. His emigre passenger manifest gives his town as "Petrikau", the German language name for that city back in the 1890s Russian Empire. The German name for it was Rosenberg. His parents considered themselves to be ethnically German. He arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on 11 Aug 1892 to join his brother Julius in Cleveland, spent a few years in Kentucky as a farmer, then permanently returned to Cleveland.

August's name was originally August Ewert, but the phonetic spelling of "Evert" began appearing in records, such as the US Federal Census, and he is buried as such. It's not clear yet when he began using that variation himself. His birth dates vary in the records: Aug 1867, 1868, 23 Feb 1869, 25 Feb 1869. (There are variations in many of the birth dates among this family's records. in that first and second generation.)

August is also found arriving in Baltimore on the SS Munchen on 8 Sep 1898 with his wife, Bertha Papke. They were returning from "Germany" and were listed as already living in Kentucky. Bertha was pregnant with their daughter, Anna (born in Louisville). August seems to have married Bertha Papke in 1922 for the second time, according to their marriage documents, following an apparent divorce from their first marriage together. By 1936 at the latest, they were divorced permanently. They had two to three children that died very young; their given names are unknown. Two children survived into adulthood to have families of their own: Anna Matilda and August R, who may have used the "Evert" name variation and definitely used the "Everett" variation.

August's left arm was disabled, but the date and circumstances of the injury aren't known.

August's wife, Bertha Papke, remarried. After that relationship broke apart, the man murdered her in 1936 before committing suicide. August and Bertha's daughter, Anna Matilda, is listed as the informant on both Bertha's and her stepfather's death certificates.
