Alta S. Meeks 1920 ~ 2010 Our wonderful, sweet and giving mother, Alta S. Meeks, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2010, at the age of 89 from complications related to Alzheimer's. She was born November 20, 1920, in Center Creek, Utah, to Louis and Ora (Gali) Sweat. She married Joseph H. Meeks on August 7, 1937, and moved to Midway, Utah, where she lived for the past 74 years. Alta was a most giving, caring and loving mother, grandmother, neighbor, community care giver and friend. She cared for anyone that was in need of help or care, regardless of status, rank, creed or religion. Alta gave mentally, physically and financially helping to ensure that others had an easier journey through life. A truly remarkable woman who's motto in life was "give until you can give no more". At 88 years old she thought it necessary not only to strive to make her yard and flower gardens the prettiest in Midway, but to take her two-mile walk down Midway Main Street, garbage bag in hand, picking up litter helping to make Midway a nicer place for her friends and neighbors. Advanced education, winning awards, serving on committees and searching for accolades were of no interest to Alta. But, she made sure her children strived for the same, while maintaining strong moral character, integrity and a value system of service to others. Alta taught her children and set an example for her friends that a commitment made was a commitment honored. Alta believed in hard and honest work, loyalty to family, friends and employers would equate to strong character, ultimate satisfaction and a "wink" from the guy up-stairs. Alta was an active member of the LDS Church and conducted her life based on the actual teachings of Christ. "Love thy neighbor as thy self", "let those without sin cast the first stone" and "blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth". Alta is survived by her children: Gerald and LaRae Durtschi, Bountiful, Dwayne and Jane Meeks, Nile andJudy Mecham, Heber City, David Meeks, Salt Lake City, Phillip and Julie Meeks, Midway, and Roger LaFeber, Salt Lake City, whom she always referred to and treated as her fourth son. Two sisters: Nelda Watkins, Heber City, Delvene Bronson, Orem. 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren and her best friend on earth, Mildred "Gig" Davis, Midway. Preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Meeks, five sisters and two brothers. Mom found a second family at the Sunrise Care Facility in Sandy. She and our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the most loving, caring and professional staff at Sunrise. They truly are the most caring and loving group of care givers that any family and resident could ever hope to have. The Alzheimer's care givers at Sunrise truly loved and cared for our mother and she loved them too. A special thanks to the nurse and Chaplain with Haven Hospice, who during mom's final weeks provided support for our family and comfort to our mom. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2010 - 11:00 a.m. in the Midway LDS 7th Ward, 250 East 200 South, Midway, Utah. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Olpin-Hoopes Funeral Home, 288 North Main Street, Heber City, and on Wednesday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. prior to the services at the LDS Church. Interment will follow the services in the Midway City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinhoopes.com
