Colonel Porter was the son of George W. Porter and Rebecca Jane Edward Porter of Dexter, MO. He was the husband of Sarah Marshall Porter. He was the brother of Dora, David, and Walter Porter. He was the father of Herbert, George, Lucille, Marvin, Walter, Murrell, Charles and Truman Porter. Colonel's father George died when Colonel was only 14 yrs. old. His family had to hire a Mr. J. Hux of Stoddard County as guardian and curator until Colonel was old enough to take charge legally of the property. His mother was not permitted to oversee the property because women were not allowed to hold a head of household position in the early 1900's. Colonel lived in the Kennett, MO area during his later years. When he died, his son Walter F. Porter crafted a tombstone from a huge piece of rock, with his name on it. Colonel was fortunate enough to be born into an affluent family in Stoddard County. Long before he died, the money and assets were dwindled away.
