Born on April 10, 1791, in Philadelphia, William Ginder was the son of August Ginder [1762-1807], and Anna "Elizabeth" Gillman of Philadelphia [1770-?]. William Ginder was baptized on September 6, 1791, at St. Michael's & Zion's Lutheran Church. His grandfather was a Philadelphia Innkeeper, Adolph Gillman (1728-1780), and his wife, Anna Catharina Kreider (1732-1773), who came to Philadelphia with her brother, Martin Kreider, from Soedel, Germany, in 1752. William's maternal great grandfather was Johann Ernst Kreider, a Court Scribe of Soedel and his wife Elizabeth Ries.
William Ginder was married to Elizabeth Beninghove on December 27, 1812. They had Charles Ginder [1814-1816]; Eva Elizabeth Ginder [1817-1818]; Susannah Louisa Ginder [1819-1879] married Chauncey David Bunce; Sarah Beninghove Ginder [1822-1890] married Emil Matthieu; Clementine Cecelia Ginder [1823-1874] married George W. Geisse, Jr; and Daughter Ginder (1826-1826).
