Author, Sertoma Pianist Carmen Penn Flinn Dies

Pianist for Will Rogers, Eva Tanguay and W. C. Fields, author and animal lover, Mrs. Carmen Penn Flinn died at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday in the home of L. L. Lapham, Rt. 3, Elida.

Mrs. Flinn, who lived for many years at 135 N. Cole, devoted her life to music, animals and writing. She authored a whimsical book about her cat, Blinks, and cocker spaniel, Myu, under the title of "Gone With The Witches" in 1959 and later wrote a volume of poetry, "When a Heart Is Young."

A great-great-granddaughter of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Flinn in recent years was best known for her musical ability, having served as pianist for more than 30 years for Sertoma Club weekly luncheon meetings and frequently for the Lions Club's minstrels.

In 1963, she was named LaSertoma Club's "Woman of the Year" and earlier was honored by the Sertoma Club for her continuous service.

Her lifelong devotion to the welfare of animals merited Mrs. Flinn being named Ohio chairman for National Cat Week in 1957 and again in 1958. In Lima she was a long-time member of the Animal Protective Association and for more than a decade was membership chairman. Her animal articles have been published locally and in national publications, including the Christian Science Monitor.

"Gone With The Witches" was described by the publisher, Vantage Press of New York, as a "lively and imaginative story of one year in a cat's life as seen by the cat." Illustrations of dogs and cats were drawn by R. G. Holm, 704 Primrose Pl., and one of the book's characters was patterned after Limaite Roger Downing.

Mrs. Flinn was the "queen" in Downing's Three Kings and a Queen combo, well known in the Lima area.

A native of Camargo, Ill., Mrs. Flinn started the first vaudeville orchestra in town at the former Orpheum Theater, now the site of Leader's Park and Shop Garage. She was 18 years of age at the time and for the next 15 years served as conductor and accompanist.

It was in that period Mrs. Flinn met such luminaries as W. C. Rogers, Gallagher and Shean and the famous female impersonator of the vaudeville circuit Julian Eltinge.

Later, Mrs. Flinn was pianist for silent movies at the Orpheum, Lyric, Sigma and Ohio theaters here. In the days of the former Faurot Opera House, now site of the S. S. Kresge Co., she was a conductor and pianist.

A member of the Christian Science Mother Church of Boston, Mrs. Flinn was a life member of the local musicians union, a member of the Ohioana Library Association, Animal Crusaders of Washington, D.C., Animal Rescue League, National Catholic Society for Animal Welfare, Irene Castle's Orphans of the Storm.

Her husband, Benjamin, died in 1938. There are no survivors.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Siferd's Westwood Chapel with Rev. Willard Thomas, Harrod, and Maj. David Deitrick of the Salvation Army in charge. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 tonight.

Pallbearers, all Sertoma members, will be Larry O'Brien, Dr. Kermit Heidt, Louis Brown, Charles Cook, Calvin Early, Meredith Morris, F. Wemmer Gooding, William Frobase and Robert Tait.

Memorial contributions may be made to the local Animal Protective Association.
