Esther "Etty" Letson was born about 1792 at Raritan Landing, near New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ, the 2nd of 5 known surviving children (4 boys/1 girl) born to John Warren Letson (1761-1832) and his wife, Christiana Clark.

She was the paternal grandschild of William Warren Letson (1730-1800) and Esther Stillwell of Raritan Landing; and gr-grandschild of this family's patriarch, Thomas Letson of England who settled in area of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, NJ and had many descendants.

She was sister to William Letson (1792-1849) who married Mary M. Brown and is buried here; and sister to Joseph Clark Letson (1807-1878), whose son Capt. Joseph Clark Letson, Jr. is also buried here. Another brother, Robert Letson, married Elsey Ann Osborn of New York and was last known to be living in Brooklyn in 1880. She was 1st cousin to Johnston Letson, wealthy rubber manufacturer of New Brunswick, buried here.

Etty was about 22 years old when she married John Stafford Terhune on June 22, 1814. Her husband was just then starting in the publishing and printing business in New Brunswick, a career he would continue until his death.

The couple would become parents to 8 known children (4 boys/4 girls): William Letson Terhune (1815-1907); Mary P. Terhune (1817-1889), m. Rev. Jonathan P. Greenleaf; Lewis T. Terhune (ca. 1817 - aft 1860); Anna Louisa Terhune (1826-1911), m. Rev. John Gaston; John Terhune Jr. (1828-1887), m. Kate Polhemus Nevius; Rev. Edward Payson Terhune (1830-1907), m. Mary Hawes; Christiana Terhune (ca. 1833-1858), m. Rev. J. H. Frazee; Margaret M. Terhune (1836-1849), died young.

Etty Letson Terhune died May 18, 1851 at about age 59. Her husband of 37 years would remarry in 1856 to Mary Jane Davidson and by her would have one more child, Howard Davidson Terhune (1859-1927), who with other financiers, organized the Hackensack National Bank at Hackensack, NJ.
