Youngest of seven children born to her parents, who married March 16, 1867 in New Concord, Calloway County, Kentucky. She was the granddaughter of Harriet Caroline Barnett and William Barnett. Her siblings included: Emmett Richard, Nellie K, James W., Hattie Lee, Carrie Edna, and Alvin Jesse. When the family moved from Kansas to Lexington, Oklahoma, May's father first ran a hotel and then was a U. S. mail carrier. In 1911, she married George Robinson and subsequently had two children: Marie and Mildred. She later married William Helcel.
