Joseph was born about 1831 in Crawford County, Ohio. The names of his parents are unknown.
On Nov. 10, 1864, he enlisted as a private and served in "D" Co., Oregon 1st Infantry. He was promoted to corporal. The Oregon infantry worked to "fight Indians" and protect wagon trains and gold shipments. He was discharged from Fort Vancouver, in Clark County, Washington, on Jan. 16, 1866. He later received a pension due to his disabilities related to his military service.
In 1870 he was living in Toledo in Benton County (now Lincoln County) near the Oregon Coast and worked as a carpenter. In January 1873 he married Eveline Tharp. Three years later Joseph acquired 159 acres in what is now Lincoln County through the Homestead Act. In 1880 he was farming near Kings Valley in Benton County.
He moved the family to farm in Klicktat County, Washington. By 1887 they had five children: Edgar, George, Pearl, Benjamin Franklin (Frank), and Sadie. In about 1893 Eve took the children and moved to Oregon to live with a sister. Before 1885 she divorced Joseph.
Before his death at age 71 Joseph was living in the Washington Soldiers Home near Orting, Pierce County, Washington. He died at the home and was buried in their cemetery.
