John Cary Headley, the son of Francis and Huldah Cary Headley, was born in 1760 in Mendham, Morris County, New Jersey.

At the age of 16 or 17 - he became a Revolutionary War Soldier - when he enlisted in June of 1776 in Morris County, New Jersey. On June 7th or 8th, 1776, he entered under the command of Colonel Caldwell and Captain Silas Beckwith of the New Jersey Militia as a militia man in Morristown, New Jersey. The regiment he was attached to marched to Springfield, New Jersey where they were then attached to General Weims regiment. From there they marched to Elizabethtown, New Jersey, where they had a battle with the enemy, and were victorious. After the battle, they were discharged on or about the 23rd of November.

In November of 1778, John Cary Headley was drafted to guard the militia stores at Luckes in Morris County, where he stayed about one month and six days under the command of Lt King and was discharged. On July 1, 1779, he volunteered as a militia man under the command of Captain Thomas Young of the New Jersey Militia in Morris County. From there he marched to Brunswick, New Jersey where he continued until he was discharged on January 7, 1780. After his discharge, John Cary Headley did no other duty, except for a number of skirmishes he was in.

He married Mary Hathaway in Mendham Township, Morris County, New Jersey in November of 1787.

John and Mary had 11 children. Issac - born August 5, 1788, Sarah - born June 20, 1791, Huldah - born September 16, 1793, Experience - born December 20, 1795, Phebe - born January 16, 1797, Francis - born May 15, 1799, Rachel - born August 11, 1801, Mary born October 5, 1803, Carey - born June 15, 1805, Susanna - born January 16, 1808 and Catharine - born August 11, 1811.

John Cary Headley died in Noble County, Ohio - on July 13, 1839 - at the age of 78 or 79.
