A.K.A. Ackers/ Acres Tosh
Born c.1684*, "Mr. Ackurs Tosh" died in "ye 54th year of his age", according to his gravestone. There is some disagreement on his parentage and other details of his life. According to one account, he is believed to have been the son of William Tosh, a passenger in the ship that carried a group of settlers from Taunton, Massachusetts, to Block Island in 1661. Another source, cited by Findagrave member Annette Wells, describes "Acres Tosh" as the "illegitimate son of John Rathborn III", with court records giving his birth as 1684. The latter source also states that he married the former Rebecca Card on July 6, 1709---the year he was named a Freeman---and that the marriage took place in New Shoreham, Block Island, the single village on the island, which is part of Washington County, RI. Records list five children born to the couple over the course of the next fifteen years: Freelove in 1712, Daniel in 1716, William in 1719, Job in 1721, and Ackers, Jr. in 1724.
A recent widower at the time of his death, Ackurs had been predeceased by his wife, Rebecca, two months earlier. The couple's graves are marked by slate ledgerstones.

*The year of Ackurs/Ackers Tosh birth has been given as early as 1684 and as late as 1687. There is disagreement over his lifespan as well. According to "A History of Block Island" written in 1876 by the Rev. S.T. Livermore, A.M., he was born in 1684 and "lived until he reached his one hundred and first year, according to the stone at his grave in the Island cemetery". If the Rev. Livermore is correct, however, then Tosh died c.1785, not 1739.
