MRS. R. HICKS IS CALLED, AT OAKLAND HOME
Mrs. Roberta Hicks one of the oldest pioneers of the Orland section passed away in her Oakland home Thursday after a lingering illness covering a period of forty years. Mrs. Hicks resided with her husband T. J. Hicks in the Orland section from 1877 until three years ago when they moved to Oakland where her husband was called shortly after they had established their new home.
Mrs. Roberta HICKS was born in Missouri in 1850. Before her marriage her maiden name was Roberta Christian. She grew to womanhood in Missouri and was married to T. J. HICKS to this happy union there were born three sons, Wilbur Hicks, born in Missouri, Bryon [Byron] and Knott HICKS, born in Orland. In the year 1877 the deceased and her husband came to California locating in the Orland section. From their first advent into the country both husband and wife were prominent factors in the community. Several years after arriving in California Mrs. Hicks was stricken with rheumatism from which she suffered until the time of her passing, but it was not until three years ago that she became a total invalid. Since that time she has been constantly under the care of a special nurse.
Of the Christian family of 12 of which Mrs. Hicks was a member, she is survived by two brothers, Oscar Christian and A. D. Christian and a sister, Mrs. F. J. Morin of Berkeley. In her own family she is survived by three sons, Wilbur, Byron and Knott Hicks.
Funeral services will be held in Orland Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Baptist church. – Transcribed by E.
