Amos Adams, of 1036 Orchard Avenue, today received a dispatch from the Texas border, stating that his son, Samuel Adams, was shot there this morning. Few Details are given as to the tragedy in the brief dispatch. It is understood, however, that the young man is dead. Mr. Adams spent his younger days in this locality, but for ten or more years was engaged as a soldier. He was a printer by trade and during his early days In the typographical art was engaged at various offices in Lebanon. When the Spanish-American War broke out, he enlisted in the volunteer army with Company H., Fourth Regiment, but re-enlisted in the regular army as soon as the volunteers were discharged. Since then he traveled extensively in various divisions of the army, and when the Mexican troubles arouse was sent with the troops to the border. The dispatch notifying the relatives here of the death came from El Paso, Texas. His wife died a number of years ago. Miss Minerva Adams, residing with the grandfather, Mr. Adams, 1036 Orchard Avenue, is a daughter of the deceased, as is also, Mrs. Anna Young, residing at Pleasant Hill. The body of Samuel Adams, son of Amos Adams, of 1036 Orchard Avenue, is expected to arrive here shortly. According to a telegram received from the post commander at Fort Bliss, Texas, Private Adams died at 3:10 p. m. on Tuesday, June 6, as a result of a self inflicted wound. The meager information conveyed does not state whether the shooting was intentional or accidental. As stated in yesterday's issue of the Daily News, the deceased was a member of the 23rd Infantry, U. S. A. He has for the past thirteen years been a member of the army, having had a varied experience in the service here and in foreign lands. As soon as the body arrives arrangements will be made for the funeral, which will be held at the home of the father, 1036 Orchard Avenue. [Lebanon Daily News, June 8, 1911, Page 3]
